Who's this?
Turmeric (Curcuma longa), also called India's Saffron, has come to us from the Far East to leave her mark. Her yellow mark is left both on textile products and kitchen's shelves, but also on the body of cats and dogs, joining the other Phyto Superheroes to make her contribution. Even if Turmeric is similar to Saffron, she belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, like Ginger. She leaves a “Z” mark on her enemies like an old hero, thanks to her root: the rhizome. This Phyto Superhero's name comes from sanskrit Kum-kuma, and she's among the most studied plants, especially in India.
Superpowers
Turmeric walks like a giant alongside the other Phyto Superheroes, being one of the most important natural anti-inflammatory substances, whose power can also exceed that of the phenylbutazone (that is a very powerful medication!).
Inside her essential oils can be found several active principles – such as curcumin, curcumene, zingiberene and turmerone – that allow her to have very important effects on cats and dogs. Turmeric stimulates the immune system, has a relevant antioxidant action, and her curcuminoids are fearsome bactericides. However, her ability to prevent and stop angiogenesis – new vessel formation – is even more important than all that.
Her Phyto Superhero activity also takes place in the liver and gall bladder, thanks to her cholagogic and choleretic activity, that's useful in cases of gallbladder inflammation and gallstones.

Be careful trying to sneak up on and catch this Phyto Superhero, because she is going to leave her yellow/orange mark on your hands. In fact, turmeric is not only a spice and a non-toxic food dye, but she is also used to dye wool and silk, together with other substances that allow her to take root. All thanks to her curcuminoids and curcumin.
Turmeric is one of the ingredients in the formulation of an ancestral balm called “Fioravanti Alcoholate”, and is also considered an acid-base indicator, that is a pH indicator, since her color turns red when she's steeped in alkaline solutions.
